Consumer Review covers outdoor and recreation equipment -- packs, tents, footwear, and the general category of gear people rely on away from home. Our focus is on how equipment holds up outside of a showroom: in weather, over repeated trips, and under the kind of wear that doesn't show up in a product photo.

We write general category guidance rather than single-product endorsements. A weekend day hiker and a multi-day backpacker are shopping for very different things even within the same product category, and we try to be clear about which considerations apply to which kind of use.

Our editorial process draws on publicly available manufacturer information, material science basics relevant to outdoor gear (breathability, water resistance ratings, and so on), and long-term ownership patterns reported by outdoor communities.
